Ingo Arndt Photo Embed Demo

The photos on this blog are Minden Pictures Photo Embeds.

The intent behind this new product launch is that access to premium images at no cost can help conservation and science writers make their online posts more compelling and their messaging more effective.

The SmartFrame technology protects your photos, keeps track of everything, and makes them useable to promote conservation and science. They work similarly to a YouTube Embed, except for photos, not video. If we find misuse, we can turn them off anywhere they appear.

If you click the "Share" button and share the Photo Embed (with a comment) on a social network, the photo appears, and you do not need to upload a jpeg. When clicked, the traffic goes to wherever the photo is embedded. In this case, it would send you back to this blog post, much like the link we sent you.

Lion Families by Suzi Eszterhas, this week's Big Picture.

Suzi Eszterhas shares her recent shots of African Lions with us in this new gallery of images. Lionesses groom each other in a tender moment, cubs test out their play fighting skills, and a lioness brings down a huge Eland to feed her family. Be sure to check out the shot of a male lion just about at the end of his patience with one persistent cub...click on any image to see more.

Big Picture: World's Largest Rodent

What makes a rodent a rodent? Their teeth which grow continuously so, must be constantly worn down by gnawing, eating abrasive foods, burrowing, and collecting bedding. Rabbits, rats, voles, marmots, and squirrels are members of the order Rodentia ( from the Latin 'rodere' that means to gnaw), which makes up 40% of mammal species.
Looking like super-sized guinea pigs, the largest rodent in the world can weigh up to 150 pounds, can run as fast as a horse, and lives a semi-aquatic lifestyle. In South America, Capybaras are highly social, often living in herds of up to twenty individuals. They mix well with other species too. In a symbiotic relationship, birds ride atop the rodents benefitting from insects the creatures disperse while helping out the capybara by eating ticks and other parasites in their pelts.

Western Deserts by Jeff Foott - This weeks Big Picture

Western Deserts by Jeff Foott

From California's towering sand dunes of the Mojave Desert to Nevada's rapidly diminishing Lake Mead, Jeff Foott shows both the ramifications of climate change and the stark beauty of these arid environments.
Storms in the west have increased the water levels in Lake Mead, but only fractionally. While the reservoir was at 27% capacity over the summer, it was only at 28% at the end of January. One concern about the dropping water level is about power. Intake towers for the hydroelectric plant at Hoover Dam are at near-record lows, which affects the amount of energy generated. Declining water flow has cut the dam’s power generation capacity almost in half over the last ten years.

In Capitol Reef National Park, you will find a rare 15-foot high mound of selenite glass crystals called Glass Mountain, whose formation began over 165 million years ago. These large crystals are valuable to collectors. Indeed, a similar mound outside the protection of the park boundaries has been reduced to ground level over the years by visitors.
